Segmented Flow Reactor Systems
The Propel and Conjure are fully automated segmented flow chemistry systems, which are designed to give higher experimental throughput compared to conventional continuous flow chemistry systems.
The segmented flow system delivers pulses of reactants that are segregated by an immiscible solvent into the flow reactor. Each segment can consist of a different combination of reactants for different reactions to occur. This allows the system to deliver a series of segments of different reactants to the flow reactor. This saves a lot of time by allowing experiments with similar residence time and reaction temperature to be injected in series.

Higher Experimental Throughput: The throughput of the segmented flow system can be as much as 10 times greater than the conventional continuous flow system. This is especially useful for screening, optimization and library synthesis. Because experiments (segments) are segregated by immiscible solvent, multiple segments can be metered, mixed and injected into the flow reactor in a serial/parallel methodology.
Extreme Reaction Conditions: The segmented flow system enables extreme reaction conditions with temperatures from -20 to 300°C, and pressures of up to 150 bar. This is more extreme than typical small scale microwave reactors.
Smaller Amount of Reactants: Unlike continuous flow chemistry, the amount of reactant used in a segmented flow system is independent of the reactor volume. In a segmented flow system, the minimum amount of reagent is determined by the stoichiometry of the reaction. It can be as low as 20 uL.
No Dilution Effects: As the segmented flow system uses immiscible solvent to separate each concentrated segment, the dilution effects observed in a continuous flow system is non-existent in the segmented flow system. This provides more consistent sampling for subsequent LC/MS analysis.
